Jaden Umeh starts for Benfica, taken off as precaution after Emerson Royal challenge

Jaden Umeh started for Benfica against Flamengo but was withdrawn before the interval after a heavy challenge from Emerson Royal.

The 18-year-old Irish winger was fouled on 20 minutes and stayed down, then returned to play. According to Glorioso 1904, the substitution that followed was precautionary and the foot issue does not appear serious.

With staff monitoring him closely, Marco Silva chose to act during the first-half hydration break, introducing Gianluca Prestianni in Umeh’s place.

Umeh has caught the eye in the opening stages of pre-season, earning the coach’s trust.

Having spent most of last season with the juniors, he has used training and friendlies to underline his potential, which earned him a starting XI spot against Flamengo.
