Jair Ventura has defended his survival-specialist tag, pointing to Flamengo to stress how much staying up matters. Between 2020 and 2025 he kept Sport, Juventude, Goiás, Juventude and Vitória in the Brasileirão.

"Go and look on the internet, find someone who has kept five teams up in nine years. There is none. The day I do not keep one up, then another, maybe people will move to another label. So why would I be upset about something positive? They are five extremely difficult feats to achieve," said Jair Ventura. He told GE.

"There are only two clubs who have not been relegated, after Santos went down, only São Paulo and Flamengo. Ask the supporters of other clubs who were relegated about the importance of staying up. 'Ah, but they are celebrating survival.' Let your team go down and see," he added.

Flamengo also shaped Ventura’s 2025. After an 8-0 win over Vitória, the Bahia club dismissed Fábio Carille and appointed Ventura. Vitória then drew 0-0 with Palmeiras in November, a result that contributed to Flamengo winning the title, and they avoided relegation on the final day.

Ventura’s Vitória face Flamengo in the third round of the Brasileirão at Barradão on Tuesday. Before that, Flamengo are in Campeonato Carioca action against Sampaio Corrêa at the Maracanã on Saturday.
