From Trentside to Tyneside - August 2014 A 20-year-old Lascelles, who began his career at Nottingham Forest, joined the Magpies on the same day as Forest teammate Karl Darlow under Alan Pardew's management. The Derby-born defender, along with Darlow, spent the 20214/15 campaign on loan at the City Ground before returning to St. James' Park the following summer.
Magpies debut - August 2015 A year after putting pen to paper on joining United, Lascelles completed a positive debut in a 4-1 win against Northampton Town in the League Cup. Florian Thauvin grabbed the headlines, grabbing a goal and three assists in a 4-1 win, as Lascelles played the full 90 minutes of the second round tie at St. James' Park.
A Saint among men - April 2016 The Magpies may have suffered a 3-1 defeat away at Southampton en route to relegation from the Premier League but it was the 22-year-old's courageous, yet honest words towards his senior peers which resonated with United supporters. "We need bigger characters on the pitch, players who care and who are going to get after each other," Lascelles told the BBC. "We need to play with more heart. We've got flair players, tricky players, players with loads of talent, but we need more heart. We need more desire."
Captaincy - August 2016 After captaining Rafa Benítez's side during pre-season ahead of the 2016/17 season, Lascelles was awarded the armband on a permanent basis following Fabricio Coloccini's departure. He told newcastleunited.com: "It's an unbelievable feeling for a manager like Rafa Benítez to give me the captain's armband at a club like this. "It is a lot of responsibility for a young player but I will always give my all because I want what is best for the team and the club. "It is such a proud moment for me and the biggest in my career so far. It is nice for someone to show that much trust in you and I want to repay the manager's faith by leading this team back into the Premier League."
Championship winners - May 2017 United did just that during the 2016/17 campaign after recording 94 points, pipping Brighton & Hove Albion on a dramatic final day by a single point. Lascelles was an ever-present in our backline, playing 43 Championship matches as well as being named in the division's PFA Team of the Year alongside Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle.
Six more years - October 2017 Lascelles committed his long-term future to the club after signing a new six-year deal. A North East Football Writers' Association Player of the Year winner in 2017, Lascelles enjoyed a bright start to the 2017/18 campaign. The centre-back scored two winning goals in September, receiving a Premier League Player of the Month nomination. Speaking about his new deal, Lascelles said: “I’m over the moon. Since I came to Newcastle, I’ve been happy; I love the city, the football and the fans. “We’ve got a group of ambitious lads, the fans are excellent and the manager has got trust in me, so I’m really happy here and I want to take the club as high as it can go.”
Top ten finish - May 2018 Lascelles started United's final 22 Premier League games, playing every minute as the Magpies secured a top half finish in the English top-flight. A 3-0 home win against Chelsea on the final day of the season resulted in a 10th place finish via a superior goal difference over Crystal Palace and AFC Bournemouth.
Road to Wembley - August 2022 Newcastle reached the Carabao Cup final in 2023, their first domestic cup final for 24 years, and it was Lascelles who kickstarted the club's voyage to Wembley Stadium. Tasked with a second round tie away at Tranmere Rovers, the Magpies came from behind to beat the League Two side, with Lascelles on target in a 2-1 victory at Prenton Park. The wait for a first domestic trophy since 1955 would continue after a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in the final. But not for long.
Championship to Champions League - October 2023 Seven years prior to Newcastle's UEFA Champions League visit of Paris Saint-Germain, Lascelles led the club to a 1-0 away win at Rotherham United, moving within three points off the Championship summit. In the Magpies' first Champions League game at St. James' Park for two decades, Newcastle dismantled the French giants in a 4-1 triumph as Lascelles, who led the side out as club captain, kept Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé at bay on a night that will live long in the memory of Newcastle fans.
When Jamaal goes up... - March 2025 A 70-year wait for a domestic trophy came to an end as Newcastle lifted the Carabao Cup last season, recording a historic 2-1 win against Liverpool at Wembley. Although Lascelles was injured for the final, recovering from a long-term anterior cruciate ligament injury, the defender walked up the Wembley steps before lifting the trophy alongside Bruno Guimarães and Kieran Trippier.
Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Jamaal for his incredible service to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.
