James Morrison has appointed Matt Gill as his permanent assistant at West Brom, building what he believes is a strong and varied staff for the new season. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Baggies moved to keep Gill after his part in last term’s Championship survival.
Kent-born Gill, a long-time lieutenant to Russell Martin, impressed the squad with energetic, possession-focused training and now steps up as Morrison’s assistant.
Morrison has also added Gavin Strachan, 47, and Tony McMahon, 40, to his first-team coaching group. Strachan spent six years coaching at Celtic and previously served as Darren Ferguson’s assistant at Doncaster and Peterborough.
McMahon, Morrison’s former Middlesbrough team-mate, arrives as first-team coach after roles at Scunthorpe United and York City, where he was director of football until 2025. Morrison says he trusts McMahon’s judgement and values his insight.
The head coach praised Gill’s contribution to securing safety, and believes Strachan’s perspective, shaped by working with Martin O’Neill, Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, will bring fresh ideas.
Spanish coach Damia Abella has left after three years on the staff under Carlos Corberan, Tony Mowbray, Ryan Mason, Eric Ramsay and Morrison. Abella earned his UEFA Pro Licence this summer and was well regarded within the club.
Goalkeeper coach Boaz Myhill stays on, while academy stalwart Leigh Downing returns to lead the under-21s. Morrison thanked his staff for last season’s efforts and wished Abella well for the future.
