Liverpool approach their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid in strong form. Under Arne Slot, the club lifted the Premier League title in his debut season and now sit on four wins from four in the new campaign. Having overcome Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Burnley, confidence is high and attention turns to Europe.
Jan Molby, speaking to Trev Downey for Anfield Index, shared valuable insights on the tie. His thoughts provide perspective on what lies ahead for Slot’s side and on the enduring challenge of Diego Simeone’s Atletico.
Molby pointed towards how the revamped Champions League can shape Liverpool’s chances. “I think with the rule change with the top eight having away games first and you’ll finish your ties at home, that will be a massive help and is important.” Playing the second leg at Anfield could prove decisive, especially given the atmosphere that often shifts European nights in Liverpool’s favour.
He also highlighted Liverpool’s impressive performance in last season’s league phase. “Last year, the top eight all won at least five games and Liverpool were the only team to win seven.” Despite that dominance, they fell in the round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain, who went on to win the competition. Molby’s reminder underlines both the progress already made under Slot and the margins that define success at this level.
The Dutchman has already demonstrated tactical clarity in domestic competition and Molby sees him as someone ready to seize the opportunity. “Let’s not forget that in the end, second third and fourth from the league phase ended up in the semi-finals.” He added, “Arne will look at that and think it’s pretty straightforward to just go for it.”
Slot’s Liverpool look well-drilled, with quick transitions and high pressing already producing results in the Premier League. A strong European campaign will require the same fearlessness and, crucially, efficiency in front of goal.
Few managers in modern football have stamped such a lasting identity on a club as Simeone has at Atletico. Yet Molby questioned the sustainability of his style. “Simeone doesn’t just have a bit about him, he will do anything to win.” He continued, “I don’t know what to think about Atletico Madrid. Simeone has been there for a long time now and I would think he has done quite well.”
Despite acknowledging Simeone’s success, Molby did not shy away from his scepticism. “I’ve never been a big fan of the football they play and now I just wonder whether people are getting a bit tired with that.” It is a reminder that Atletico’s approach can frustrate but also risks looking outdated when faced with teams who strike first.
Molby pointed to one of Atletico’s greatest strengths in goal. “They’ve got one of the best goalkeepers of the last ten years in Jan Oblak, but the moment Liverpool score a goal then their strategy goes out of the window.” His assessment was clear. “It’s all about the first goal, it’s crucial. If we can get the first goal, then they would need to open up a little bit more.”
Liverpool have every reason to be optimistic heading into this clash. Momentum is with them, and the memory of last year’s early exit will add determination. Slot’s side carry the belief of champions and Molby’s words serve as both a caution and an encouragement. Atletico remain difficult, but with the right start and the backing of Anfield in the return leg, Liverpool have the tools to progress further in Europe.
