Manchester United refused to be fleeced by West Ham, as they ended up losing the race to sign Mateus Fernandes.
Tottenham Hotspur, who entered the picture very recently, flipped the script on its head with their substantial contract offer for the Portugal international.
Despite West Ham’s rivalry with their fellow London club, many Hammers fans have been gloating over United’s inability to land the midfielder.
INEOS may yet have the last laugh, with two more West Ham stars reportedly on their radar.
Crysencio Summerville has been identified as an option to strengthen the left flank, an area where the Red Devils lack a specialist.
While West Ham would like to keep hold of to the Dutchman, given his World Cup heroics, it is unlikely that the 24-year-old will want to play in the Championship next season.
An even bigger blow for the recently relegated side could be the loss of their captain, Jarrod Bowen.
In a disappointing season, the 29-year-old emerged as their solitary ray of light, registering 11 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.
Daniel Kretinsky, who is set to become the largest shareholder, is desperate to keep a hold of the Englishman, but The Guardian have claimed United, along with a host of other clubs, are eyeing a move.
“The sale of Fernandes will be the highest made by a Championship club. West Ham are poised for a rebuild after falling into the second tier and will hope that bringing in £85m for one player eases their financial concerns.
“However, West Ham are still expected to lose the Netherlands winger Crysencio Summerville, who is a target for United and Chelsea. Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool, United and Chelsea are monitoring Jarrod Bowen but West Ham are desperate to hold on to their captain.”
The England international can play on either flank and even as a striker, a position United are keen to strengthen to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko.
Having such a versatile attacker in their ranks would be a massive bonus for Michael Carrick as he prepares to navigate four different competitions next season.
