Third division side De Treffers completed their first training session on Monday evening in preparation for the new season. As per Voetbal International, they were joined by two fairly well-known names – Jasper Cillessen and Theo Janssen.
Starting in the new football season, former Vitesse, Ajax and FC Twente midfielder Janssen, will start his first job as head coach in Groesbeek. Since his retirement from football, he has held several positions within Vitesse. On Monday, he led the training of his own team for the first time.
“We were there at four o’clock this afternoon, while training didn’t start until a quarter to eight”, Janssen told De Gelderlander with a broad smile. “It’s finally starting. De Treffers doesn’t feel like a typical amateur club. Everything is professionally organised here.”
This final fact has helped the club attract Las Palmas’ Cillessen, who trained with the club to keep his fitness up. In 2024, he signed a contract for two seasons in Spain, but on Monday, he suddenly appeared on the field at De Treffers. “I have to stay fit, you know, I’m not 18 anymore”, the 65-cap Dutch international told the newspaper.
Janssen provided further context: “He lives nearby, wants to stay fit and asked if he could train with us. Of course, he can. He is always welcome.”
