Jean-Ricner Bellegarde has suffered a hamstring injury in training and will be out for a number of weeks. The Wolves midfielder returned only last week after representing Haiti at the World Cup.
Wolves director of performance Phil Hayward said an MRI revealed a fairly high-grade issue in Bellegarde’s left hamstring, and that it will be a few weeks before he is back on the grass, with a shorter timeline than for Rafiki.
Staff had built him up slowly following his return, but one action in a weekend session triggered the problem. Players who went to the World Cup had three weeks off, including a week of holiday conditioning, which he completed, making the setback frustrating.
Bellegarde sustained a similar hamstring injury on the opposite side last December. Because this problem is not in a previously injured area, recovery would generally be quicker than a recurrence, though it remains unwelcome.
Managing workloads has been difficult after a long season that barely paused for the World Cup, and the new campaign starts in two weeks. The aim is to balance risk and get him back as quickly as possible.
Elsewhere, Fer Lopez, who missed the Maidenhead and Real Sociedad friendlies with a minor groin issue, has trained this week and will be available for the final two friendlies of the summer. Adam Armstrong should continue to be available after a recent calf knock.
