Jeremy Doku is set for crucial talks with Manchester City this summer as the Belgian winger seeks clarity over his long-term role amid growing interest from Spain, according to a new report.

The 23-year-old winger remains a crucial player at City, but his place in Pep Guardiola’s attacking system has become somewhat uncertain over the past year.

Doku has demonstrated his trademark speed and dribbling skills since joining from Stade Rennais FC in 2023 for a reported £55.5 million fee, but has not always been one of the first names on the team sheet since.

The Semenyo & Cherki Factor: Why Competition at the Etihad is Peaking

Over the past few transfer windows, Manchester City’s attacking options have expanded significantly, with Antoine Semenyo joining the team from Bournemouth during the most recent winter window, increasing competition for spots on the wings.

Earlier in the summer of 2025, Manchester City signed creative midfielder Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais, to give Pep Guardiola greater flexibility in the final third and versatility in a multitude of roles.

In Guardiola’s fluid attacking system, there is always an intense competition for spots in the line-up, with the Catalan coach often rotating his forwards based on tactical demands, pressing requirements and the opposition’s defensive structure.

Analysing Jeremy Doku’s Impact Under Pep Guardiola

While that environment has helped some attackers within the Manchester City squad, it has also made it hard to get consistent starting chances. Jeremy Doku, however, has been a steady contributor, scoring 17 goals and assisting 32 times in 116 matches across all competitions.

And according to a recent report from TEAMtalk, discussions between Doku and Manchester City are scheduled to take place this summer regarding the possibility of a new contract.

The winger’s current deal runs until the summer of 2028, but upcoming talks are expected to focus on his role within the squad as much as contractual terms.

Pep Guardiola values the Belgium international‘s explosive speed and ability to take on defenders one-on-one, but the report has also indicated how the player now wants more clear assurances about how he fits into the club’s long-term plans.

Could Doku Replace Julián Álvarez in Spain?

External interest could grow stronger if there is still uncertainty about his situation, and Atlético Madrid are among the clubs monitoring the situation, reportedly looking at possible attacking reinforcements in case they need to make changes to their squad.

The Spanish team may have to make major adjustments to their forward line as the future of striker Julián Álvarez remains uncertain, while Antoine Griezmann may also depart. Doku is considered high on that list in the Spanish capital, but Atlético are not believed to be the only club monitoring the situation.

For now, the focus remains on the upcoming discussions which could decide whether the Belgian international commits his long-term future to Manchester City or whether his situation becomes one of the most interesting stories of the summer transfer window.

A lot will depend on how Pep Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy see the next phase in Manchester City’s attacking evolution. For Jeremy Doku, clarity over his role may prove just as important as the contract itself as he weighs the next stage of his career.
