Jesse Lingard should make his Corinthians debut against Fluminense at the Maracanã on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time. According to Globo.com, Grêmio striker Carlos Vinicius, the current Brasileirão top scorer, played a key role in steering the Englishman to Brazil.
The pair never shared a club but got to know each other during Carlos Vinicius’s three seasons in the United Kingdom, facing off several times. As Lingard searched for a new challenge in the last window, agent Fernando Martins first explored the idea of Grêmio after consulting Carlos Vinicius.
Talks with Grêmio stalled, so Martins contacted Corinthians executive Marcelo Paz, outlined realistic terms within the wage cap, and quickly set up a video call with Lingard. Further discussions with head coach Dorival Júnior and football manager Renan Bloise covered technical details, including the position Lingard prefers.
With Dorival’s approval and negotiations advancing, Lingard sought advice from Memphis Depay, a friend from their Manchester United days. Depay warned of pressure and a relentless calendar, but praised Brazil’s culture and Corinthians’ set-up, which left the 33-year-old more eager to move.
Lingard also had an offer from New York Red Bulls and held talks with Remo, though the latter did not appeal. Corinthians’ speed in negotiations and the chance to experience the country of football proved decisive.
Settling plans are already in place. Unlike Depay, who has been living in a hotel since arriving in Brazil a year and a half ago, Lingard has chosen a home in São Paulo’s Itaim Bibi neighbourhood.
His early impressions have been positive, from the training facilities to a cohesive dressing room, even a live music lunch designed to integrate the squad. He has visited a favela in São Paulo, hopes to explore Brazil’s beaches and nature soon, and is focused on making his mark for Corinthians.
