Corinthians announced the signing of English midfielder Jesse Lingard on Friday, and he was greeted with a warm Instagram welcome from Memphis Depay.

The pair were team-mates at Manchester United in 2015 and 2016, playing 31 matches together and combining for one direct goal involvement. Depay’s post welcomed him to what was described, literally, as the biggest.

Corinthians are only the second club Lingard has represented outside England. From 2024 to the end of last year he was with South Korean side FC Seoul, where he registered 19 goals and 10 assists in 67 appearances.

Lingard joins on a free transfer with a deal running until the end of this year, which could be extended to December 2027.

He is Corinthians’ seventh addition of the year, following centre-back Gabriel Paulista, right-back Pedro Milans, midfielders Matheus Pereira, Allan and Zakaria Labyad, and forward Kaio César. The return of left-back Fabrizio Angileri has also been confirmed after his contract expired at the turn of the year.

Lingard has shown eagerness on arrival, but he might not feature immediately as he is working on fitness and finalising paperwork. Corinthians face Coritiba on Wednesday at 21:30 in the fifth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
