Former Lioness and current pundit at Euro 2025, Jill Scott, believes there has been an overreaction to England’s first loss at the tournament.
Jill Scott is representing the BBC at this summer’s tournament, with one of the most experienced Lionesses providing key insights into what goes on behind the scenes during a major competition having played in so many herself.
Despite England’s shock loss to France in their first group game, Scott believes that there is no reason to panic: “I 100 per cent think there has been an overreaction,” she said.
“I feel like the team loses, and then suddenly it’s panic stations, and everybody’s writing about how this is the first time a team has lost their opening game since winning it, and looking for that negative stance on it.”
The loss to France puts England in a win or go home position heading into their second game, but the team and former players clearly have no doubt over the quality within the squad.
“But we have to remember that France are one of the top teams. It was always going to be a close game, and they’ve got some amazing players who I think really played well on that particular day.” Scott continued.
“For me, it’s about not panicking. We know in football, there’s going to be criticism, but the girls, just need to focus on the the job in hand.”
The Lionesses have a chance to prove Scott right as soon as Wednesday afternoon, when they take on the Netherlands in an all-important second group game.
If anyone knows the ability of the current Lionesses then it is Jill Scott, who was teammates with many of the current England players when they won Euro 2022.
The 38-year-old retired from football shortly after winning the Euros and almost immediately turned to punditry for BBC and ITV as well as working on the popular ‘Overlap’ podcast.
Scott played 161 times for England throughout her career, making her the second-most capped player of all time for the Lionesses.
After losing to France in their first game at Euro 2025, the Lionesses outright odds for the competition went up significantly.
Although they were available at just 7/2 before the tournament began, England are now priced at 7/1 to defend their Euro 2022 title with the best UK football betting sites.
Sarina Wiegman’s side are 3/4 favourites to beat the Netherlands on Wednesday and still only 8/11 to qualify for the knockouts, with the second group game crucial to their success this summer.
