Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves for Villa in a £38m deal, with the midfielder due to undergo a medical after talks accelerated in recent days.

ExpressAndStar.com reports that he has left the club’s training ground in Portugal and will fly back to the UK to finalise what would be comfortably the biggest transfer between the West Midlands neighbours.

Villa turned to Gomes after Amadou Onana suffered a long-term injury, then Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United in a £38m move earlier this week.

Talks have also taken place with Bayern Munich over the possibility of signing Portugal international Joao Palhinha on loan.

Atletico Madrid had been heavily linked and, following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, he was widely expected to depart, but a deal did not materialise.

Villa are on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal before the end of the week. Right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight and assisting six. Manchester United had also been credited with interest, but Villa have made the decisive move.
