Joel Piroe has been named in Surinames 26-man squad and could make his debut this month as they chase World Cup qualification.

Piroe switched allegiance earlier this year after youth caps for the Netherlands, qualifying for Suriname through his father. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old had not played international football since Under-20 level.

Henk ten Cates team are two wins from a first ever World Cup. They face Bolivia in Guadalupe on Thursday, March 26, with victory setting up a decider against Iraq the following week.

This is Piroes first call-up, arriving as he targets helping to write history for Suriname and to make his family proud. He has visited the country many times and feels its culture informs his game, while excitement is building for Bolivia with the stakes clear to the squad.

He will travel after Saturdays Premier League meeting with Brentford, having recently scored his first goal of the season in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Norwich City. He will also work under former Leeds striker Hasselbaink, an assistant to Ten Cate.

Another familiar name in the squad is Jay-Roy Grot, who joined Leeds at 19 in 2017 and scored once in 23 games before leaving for VfL Osnabruck in February 2021. Now with Odense Boldklub, the 28-year-old has two goals in 11 outings this season and could partner Piroe later this month.
