Derby County opened up their 2025/26 Championship campaign with a 3-1 defeat against Stoke City.

The Rams quickly put this behind them to defeat West Bromwich Albion on penalties in the EFL Cup, with Joe Ward scoring a crucial goal in the 90+6th minute equaliser to take the game to spot kicks.

John Eustace has added to his team extensively in the summer transfer window, acquiring talents such as Patrick Agyemang and Carlton Morris with no expense spared.

However, there are still areas of Derby’s squad that could be improved, such as in wide areas.

Football League World’s Derby County fan pundit, Shaun Woodward, would be extremely keen to see the Rams recruit some new talent on the wing.

“We desperately need wingers in, but I couldn't tell you who,” stated Shaun. “I think we need bodies in the building because Corey Blackett-Taylor's out now for six weeks.

“His track record of injuries is diabolical at the club, so even if he does come back, I don't expect him to last very long because he never does.

“He's only played a handful of games in his two years at the club, so as good as he is when he's fit, he's pretty much a pointless player to have in the squad because he never lasts more than a couple of games.

“Kane Wilson is another quality player on his day, but is also injured all the time. We've got Kayden Jackson who keeps fit but he's diabolical if we're totally honest, one of our weakest players and doesn't really offer anything. His goal and assist record is horrific during his time at Derby.

“Joe Ward is potentially more of a wing-back, but is again another one that's always in the treatment room. It just seems like whenever we get any wingers into the building, they just get injured.

“So, it's an area we desperately need to bring in some players who are a bit more robust and that can last a 46-game Championship season because at the moment, despite all the signings we've made, we're still out on bare bones, which is really worrying.”

Derby County are running out of time to bring in some fresh blood on the wing

Eustace made his transfer priorities clear earlier in the window, spending heavily on two strikers to head up Derby’s attack.

Experienced operators were also on the 45-year-old’s shopping list, recruiting Andreas Weimann and Danny Batth from former club Blackburn Rovers.

Other exciting additions have come in the form of Bobby Clark and Rhian Brewster, but bringing in some new talent out wide hasn’t been something Eustace has explored.

If the Rams’ boss wishes to address this problem, time is running out for him to do so, with the transfer window slamming shut on September 1.
