Johny Placide brought the curtain down on more than fifteen years with Haiti in a 4-2 World Cup defeat to Morocco in Atlanta on Wednesday, a raucous farewell for the 38-year-old goalkeeper.

According to L'Équipe, the occasion was feverish as Placide signed off for the national team. He made eight saves in a breathless contest, though he lamented spilling the ball for Achraf Hakimi's equaliser.

His international career spanned 84 caps, and head coach Sébastien Migné had noted on the eve that it had included far tougher trips and that Haiti owed him the finest send-off.

Placide spoke of intense emotion, saying a full stadium felt a fitting finale and that he could not have dreamed of a better farewell. He expressed pride at appearing on that stage and hoped Haitians were proud too.

Celebrations erupted in Port-au-Prince as the Grenadiers scored, Haiti's first World Cup goals in 52 years.

He highlighted memories that will stay with him, from the 2019 Gold Cup run to the semi-finals to the long-awaited qualification, adding that he hoped the next appearance would come sooner. Forward Wilson Isidor said he was confident Haiti could return in four years and that the team had wanted to deliver something special for Placide, whom he described as a national-team legend.
