FC Bayern will make up the biggest block within the German national team at the 2026 World Cup. Alongside Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, one player in particular is now attracting attention: Jonas Urbig has been given a very special role by the DFB

Although the 22-year-old has not been officially named in the final 26-man squad, he will nevertheless accompany the German national team during their World Cup preparations

National coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed at the press conference for the squad nomination that Urbig is part of the extended squad as fourth goalkeeper and will train regularly

The DFB coach was extremely impressed with the Bayern keeper: „He’s done well with us, he’s a bright lad,“ explained Nagelsmann

Not only Urbig’s quality is particularly important, but also his mentality: „We still need someone who is not too shy to throw himself into everything in training in order to bring out the highest level,“ emphasized the national coach

Urbig gains important DFB experience

Internally, the DFB has long seen Urbig as a potential national goalkeeper of the future

The additional invitation should therefore also help the Bayern keeper to gain experience with the national team at an early stage. „He deserves to be there, but is not in the official squad. He will accompany us and do very well,“ said Nagelsmann

Urbig also continues to enjoy great confidence at FC Bayern

The young keeper is already being built up internally as a potential long-term successor to Manuel Neuer and has gained important experience this season as the world champion’s backup

His development is being followed extremely closely both in Munich and by the DFB

Four goalkeepers are not uncommon

Interestingly, Germany is by no means alone with this solution. Other nations also rely on additional goalkeepers in training during the tournament preparations

Portugal, for example, is also traveling to the tournament with four goalkeepers

For Jonas Urbig, the special DFB role now means one thing above all: gaining valuable experience – and recommending himself for bigger tasks in the future.
