Jordan Henderson has said goodbye to Brentford as a move to Chelsea edges closer. His contract was mutually terminated on Wednesday, opening the door to Stamford Bridge.

According to Sunderland Echo, new Blues head coach Xabi Alonso wants added experience for the new season and has targeted the former Sunderland midfielder. He was unable to prise Granit Xhaka from Wearside this summer and subsequently turned to Henderson.

Henderson expressed gratitude for the chance Brentford gave him to return to the Premier League. He was proud of what the team achieved last season and described the club as ambitious, progressive and full of good people.

He thanked supporters for unwavering backing and highlighted the bond they share with the club. He also namechecked owner Matt Benham, senior figures Phil Giles and Lee Dykes, head coach Keith Andrews, staff and team-mates.

Another former Sunderland player, Danny Welbeck, looks set to join Chelsea in the coming days. The 35-year-old spent 2010/11 on loan at the Stadium of Light and is currently at Brighton.

He is set to undergo a medical after agreeing personal terms on a two-year contract, with an undisclosed fee said to have been agreed. Since 2020 Welbeck has 51 goals and 18 assists in 201 appearances for Brighton.

He scored 13 in 37 Premier League outings last term and is Albion’s all-time top scorer in the competition.
