Jordan Henderson is set to make England history at this summer’s World Cup finals after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad, a call-up that takes him to a seventh major tournament.
Sunderland Echo notes that the Brentford midfielder’s inclusion sparked debate after the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain head coach unveiled his list for North America last month, yet he remains a trusted figure respected within the camp.
The former Sunderland midfielder won his first senior cap in a 2-1 defeat to France in November 2010, four months after leaving Sunderland for Liverpool in a reported £15m deal.
Having featured at six major tournaments, he had been level with Sol Campbell and Wayne Rooney at the top of England’s list. This selection will move him clear, and he called it an honour.
He said everyone knows what England means to him and that he feels very honoured and lucky to have the opportunity. His aim, he added, is to be the best version of himself, ready to help the team on and off the pitch and give everything to help them be successful.
He reflected that the last few years have been a roller coaster, and that he has worked hard and made sacrifices to be in this position. He expressed gratitude for the chance and said it is about giving absolutely everything to make the nation proud by being themselves.
