Atlético Saguntino have added former Valencia CF goalkeeper Jorge Bartual to lead their goalkeeper training, a timely move as the club push for promotion to Segunda RFEF.

According to Superdeporte, the Valencia-born coach, born in 1971, spent six seasons with Valencia CF’s first team and previously worked on Rafa Benítez’s staff at Dalian Yifang FC in China, having competed alongside Zubizarreta and Cañizares.

Under Guillem Beltrán, Saguntino sit third in Group VI of Tercera RFEF on 47 points, securing a promotion play-off berth. Castellonense lead on 57 and hold the direct promotion place, with Saguntino still chasing it.

Bartual progressed through Valencia CF’s academy and kept goal for Valencia Mestalla in the 1990s. He debuted for the first team in 1995-96, playing eight matches in Primera División, and was in the squads that won the 1998-99 Copa del Rey and the 1999-2000 Supercopa de España.

He retired in the early 2000s after spells with CD Tenerife and Quintanar del Rey. At Saguntino he will work with first-choice keeper Diego Huesca, who has started most of this season’s matches.

He will also oversee the development of Claudio Pardo, a young Valencian goalkeeper viewed as a prospect for the club. The appointment strengthens Saguntino’s technical set-up for the run-in.
