Jorge Mas has outlined Inter Miami’s economics, saying heavyweight sponsors are essential because Lionel Messi’s total annual cost is between 70 and 80 million dollars.

“The reason I need sponsors, and that they are world-class sponsors, is because players are expensive. I pay Messi, and it is worth every cent, but it is between 70 and 80 million dollars a year, if you count everything,” said Mas, a co-owner alongside his brother Jose and David Beckham, according to Bloomberg.

That sum does not match the MLS 2025 salary report, which lists 12 million dollars for the Argentine.

The discrepancy is tied to a clause Messi signed on joining in 2023 that grants a percentage of the club’s valuation. Inter Miami was valued at 585 million dollars before he arrived, and is now estimated at 1.35 billion dollars.

The club has not disclosed the percentage, which is now estimated at about 60 million dollars. On arriving in Florida, Messi also struck deals with Apple, the MLS broadcaster, and Fanatics, and Mas’s figure does not include those revenues.
