UEFA confirmed on Monday that Spanish referee José Maria Sanchez Martinez will take charge of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool on Wednesday at 21:00.
He does not stir especially happy memories for PSG, although that was last season. He previously oversaw the second leg against Aston Villa, which the English side won 3-2, but PSG advanced after a 3-1 first-leg win.
A regular for the Clasico and other high-stakes matches in Spain, Sanchez Martinez has faced criticism from a section of Real Madrid supporters.
He has officiated widely in Europe, including 19 Champions League matches.
This season the 42-year-old has refereed five Champions League games, issuing 22 yellow cards and two reds.
