Jose Mourinho has been linked with a sensational return to Real Madrid.
According to the Portuguese outlet Record, Madrid’s president Florentino Perez is considering appointing Mourinho as their new manager.
‘The Special One’ is currently managing Benfica, having joined the club in September on a deal until 2027.
His contract contains a clause that would allow him to join Madrid.
Mourinho managed the Spanish club between 2010 and 2013. He led them to three trophies – the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana.
Despite the success, the 63-year-old’s tenure was also marked by internal tensions as he fell out with several senior players.
Madrid are expected to part company with current boss Alvaro Arbeloa at the end of the season.
The 43-year-old replaced Xabi Alonso, who resigned following the Spanish Super Cup loss in January.
Arbeloa, who began his tenure with a Copa del Rey defeat to Albacete, has failed to deliver results at the club.
Madrid crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Bayern Munich, who won the tie 6-4 on aggregate.
Elimination from Europe means they are almost certain to end the campaign without a major trophy.
Madrid are trailing Barcelona by nine points in La Liga with just seven games remaining.
