José Mourinho has handed back the Benfica-issued car, doing so on Monday, 1 June, in another sign of separation from the club.

There is still no official word on his next move, and he is awaiting the result of Real Madrid’s presidential election on Sunday. According to The Athletic, he has already signed with the Spanish club until 2029 for a return to the Santiago Bernabéu, with Madrid expected to pay around 15 million euros to Benfica for his release.

Mourinho is seen as one of Florentino Pérez’s key campaign assets in the race for the presidency against Enrique Riquelme.

Real Madrid’s hierarchy are already working behind the scenes on preparations for a new Mourinho era, including shaping his backroom staff and mapping next season’s transfer plans.

At the Luz, signs continue to point towards an imminent parting of ways. Returning the club vehicle was another symbolic step, although neither side has made any formal announcement.
