Josh Sargent has slammed the Canaries' form in recent weeks.
Norwich City star Josh Sargent has slammed his side’s disappointing end to the season, branding their recent run of form as “embarrassing.”
The Canaries have won just one of their last 10 games in the Championship, a spell which has not only seen their hopes of a play-off push fade away, but has also left them staring down the barrel of a bottom-half finish.
Johannes Hoff Thorup’s men received criticism from the travelling fans on Easter Monday, when a 3-1 defeat away at Millwall compounded what was a dismal Easter weekend for the Norfolk outfit.
With their hopes of claiming a play-off spot over for another season, Sargent suggested that Norwich have let themselves down by not doing the basics right at the most crucial stage of the season.
Having been dismantled 5-3 by strugglers Portsmouth at Carrow Road on Good Friday, many would have expected a response from Hoff Thorup’s side at Millwall, but that didn’t prove to be the case.
The Canaries slipped to a two-goal deficit before the half-time interval for the fourth away game in succession, and they are struggling to even give themselves a chance to pick up points on the road.
After their latest disappointment, Sargent didn’t shy away from his team’s shortcomings and made it clear that he feels the fans deserve better than what the players are showing at the minute.
The American said: “Embarrassing. That’s it. I don’t have much more to say. The fans are deservedly very upset. We had so many out here supporting us and travelling today, and it’s just nowhere near good enough from us.
“It just comes down to doing basic things right. I’m not going to say we didn’t work hard because there are guys working hard, but just not doing the basics right.
“Just thinking about the last game – there were a couple of goals where we’re not tracking back, and it’s just doing the basics right. Everybody working hard, showing passion and showing that grit – that’s the bare minimum that we need to do.”
While several players have been linked with a move away from Norwich over the course of this season (himself included), Sargent was quick to address the suggestion that players could be thinking about their futures.
The forward continued: “I hope that’s not the case. We still have a job to do. We still have fans who come out here and support us and try to watch us, and they want to see us fight. We’re on a bad run for sure and nobody’s happy with it.”
The recent run of form that Norwich have endured hs put paid to a season that has promised so much at times.
The Canaries were one of many sides firmly in the hunt for a play-off berth before their recent rot had set in, but now that feels like a distant memory. Back in the middle of February, Hoff Thorup's side were outside the top six by just four points, now they find themselves 13 points adrift, and consigned to the second tier for another season.
Since their relegation from the Premier League back in 2022, Norwich have finished in the top six on just one occasion, and that came last time out, when they were emphatically beaten by Leeds United in the semi-final.
Given the positive signs they had shown, it’s no surprise that supporters aren't hiding their frustrations at the fact that a season that had offered so much promise, is now petering out into another mid-table finish.
The Canaries have had fantastic contributions from both Sargent and Borja Sainz, making them the only club in the division to have two players who have netted 15 or more league goals this term.
However, their efforts have been offset by a poor collective defensive showing, with their tally of 66 goals conceded currently sitting as the Championship’s fifth-worst defensive record.
