Liverpool are edging closer to securing the signature of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, as tensions between player and club continue to escalate. While the Reds’ initial bid was turned down last week, confidence remains high that a deal will be completed before the transfer window closes.
Isak, who netted 21 goals for Newcastle in the 2024-25 Premier League season, has made his intentions clear. The Swedish international is keen on a move to Anfield and has taken concrete steps to distance himself from his current side. He did not join the Newcastle squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, choosing instead to train in Spain, away from the club’s facilities. That decision has only fuelled speculation surrounding his future.
The situation surrounding Isak’s absence has raised eyebrows, with many interpreting it as a strategic move to force a transfer. Speaking exclusively to Anfield Watch, Swedish football journalist Maxi Angelo offered his perspective:
“I do believe so [that Isak will end up at Liverpool],” said Angelo.
“I think from what I’ve been able to read and hear, it feels like Alexander Isak, as far as the relationship between Isak and Newcastle, is at least reaching a point of no return. I think it says quite a lot that he’s not even training at the Newcastle facilities.
“I don’t see why he wouldn’t do that unless something’s off. Even though he’s not in Asia for the pre-season tour, he could still train at the Newcastle facilities to rehabilitate from an injury. But he’s not and I think that’s quite telling.
“As far as a percentage goes, I would say maybe 60% or 70%. That’s just my gut feeling. I think it’s getting more and more advanced each day.”
Despite the firm rejection of their opening offer, Liverpool are understood to remain in ongoing discussions behind the scenes. With Isak eager to move and Newcastle facing pressure to find a replacement, the dynamic of the negotiation is expected to shift.
Sources close to the situation have suggested that Liverpool are employing strategic patience. The Reds are no strangers to complex transfer negotiations and have frequently succeeded by allowing circumstances to play out in their favour.
While no second bid has yet been submitted, Liverpool’s interest in the 25-year-old forward has not wavered. The club view Isak as a long-term attacking asset capable of leading the line under Arne Slot, who delivered a Premier League title in his first season at Anfield.
Newcastle United are now at a crossroads. Losing their star striker would be a blow, particularly with limited time left in the window to secure a high-quality replacement. However, the club also face the risk of retaining a player whose focus appears to have shifted.
Should Isak continue to push for a departure, Newcastle may be forced to accept Liverpool’s terms or risk unrest in the dressing room. With the Sweden international sidelined from first-team duties, the pressure is building on all parties to reach a resolution.
As it stands, Liverpool are edging towards landing their primary attacking target. While formal steps may be temporarily on hold, the groundwork is already in place. Negotiations are progressing daily and momentum is shifting towards a breakthrough.
There may still be twists ahead, but all signs point to Alexander Isak pulling on a red shirt before the window slams shut.
