Real Madrid are already thinking about their players they can sign during the 2026 summer transfer window, with multiple positions in Xabi Alonso’s squad needing to be addressed. It’s no secret that a new central defender is wanted, but midfield is also on the agenda.
A replacement for Toni Kroos, who retired in 2024, has still not been sorted, and on top of this, Luka Modric has now departed too. A move for a new midfielder was considered during the recent transfer window, but in the end, it was decided that Alonso would continue with the players he has.
The likes of Rodri Hernandez and Adam Wharton have been linked, but according to Graeme Bailey (via CaughtOffside), Real Madrid are also thinking about moves for Chelsea pair Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
“Real Madrid are doing their due diligence on potential midfield options. They are constantly doing work on potential targets. Under Juni Calafat they have transformed their recruitment and their ability to make the right moves.
“The midfield department is something they are looking at. They are not worried but are concerned about their depth, and I am told that Fernandez and Caicedo are two players they love and are watching them regularly.”

It’s not the first time that Real Madrid have been noted for their interest in Fernandez, which first became known following his exploits for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. Chelsea snapped him up soon after that tournament, but they are still thinking about him as a possible addition.
It remains to be seen who Real Madrid go for next summer. Alonso will keen to emphasise that a certain profile is needed for his squad, given that he already has the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler at his disposal.
