Liverpool’s search for attacking depth could be dealt an early summer blow, with Newcastle United now emerging as favourites to sign Sporting CP striker Luis Suárez.
Credit goes to Ekrem Konur for Sports Boom for the original report, which reports that the Colombian forward has become one of Europe’s most watched attacking options after a remarkable season in Portugal.
According to the report, Suárez has become the “number one forward target” of the summer transfer window after producing outstanding numbers for Sporting CP.
The 28-year-old has scored 35 goals and supplied 9 assists across all competitions, form that has pushed him firmly onto the Premier League radar. Sports Boom states that Newcastle United are currently in “pole position” and have already started official negotiations with Sporting CP.
That is the key detail for Liverpool. While the Reds and Barcelona remain interested, both clubs are said to be taking a “wait-and-see” approach. In a fast-moving market, that often leaves the door open for a more aggressive rival.

Liverpool’s interest makes sense, particularly after Hugo Ekitike’s serious Achilles injury. Arne Slot already has Alexander Isak, but with Ekitike potentially out for nine months, the forward line needs proper protection.
However, this report suggests Liverpool are not yet pushing hard enough. Suárez is under “close monitoring”, but Newcastle appear further down the road. That could prove decisive if Sporting CP prefer a clean, structured deal.
Sporting are protected by the player’s contract, which runs until June 2030. That gives them real leverage, especially after a season in which Suárez has looked like a “complete forward”.
Sports Boom reports that Sporting are expected to demand between 50-60 million Euros. That is a significant figure for a 28-year-old, although his output makes it understandable.
The striker is also said to want a salary package worth around 7-9 million Euros annually. For Newcastle, that may be seen as a statement investment. For Liverpool, after spending £450m last summer, another major attacking deal would need careful justification.
Liverpool missing out on Suárez would not be disastrous in isolation, but it would raise familiar questions about timing. When a player is available, proven, prolific and seemingly ready for the Premier League, hesitation can be costly.
Newcastle have acted first. Liverpool are watching. In this market, that difference can decide everything.
From a Liverpool fan’s point of view, this one feels frustrating rather than devastating. Suárez looks a proper finisher, and 35 goals with 9 assists is serious production in any league. You can understand why Newcastle want to move quickly, especially if they are trying to cement themselves as a Champions League club.
For Liverpool, though, there has to be some realism. The club spent huge money last summer, brought in Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, then watched the title defence fall apart. Sitting 4th after winning the Premier League in Slot’s debut season is not where anyone expected this team to be.
Ekitike’s Achilles injury changes the picture. Nine months out is a massive blow, and suddenly another forward feels less like a luxury. Suárez might not be a long-term project at 28, but he could be a ready-made solution.
The concern is that Liverpool are once again monitoring while another club negotiates. Fans have heard that story before. Sometimes patience is sensible. Sometimes it just means watching a rival get stronger.
If Newcastle land him, Liverpool will need a convincing alternative, because this squad needs goals, durability and direction.
