Manchester United are weighing up an ambitious summer move for two of Newcastle United’s most prized assets, as INEOS continue to shape their long term recruitment strategy. Credit to Ben Jacobs, speaking on The United Stand, for first detailing the developing interest, which aligns with previous reporting around United’s projected outlay should Champions League qualification be secured.
United intend to spend £200million on new additions if interim manager Michael Carrick guides them back into Europe’s elite competition. Newcastle, meanwhile, are at risk of missing out, a scenario that could have significant financial implications.
Jacobs states that United want to sign Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon in the upcoming window. Newcastle will resist any approach, yet Champions League absence could increase pressure around player retention.

Sources have told us that Man Utd do indeed hold interest in both Tonali and Gordon.
Jones previously reported that Tonali is valued at £100million by Newcastle. In parallel, Graeme Bailey has indicated that Gordon would command £125m, with insiders suggesting that an ‘extraordinary’ proposal would be required to prise him from St. James’ Park. Newcastle are understood to reference the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak in summer 2025 as a benchmark.

United’s interest reflects a desire to add proven Premier League quality, tactical versatility and resale value, pillars that INEOS have emphasised in recent planning discussions.
Tonali brings control, tempo and authority in midfield, qualities that have been inconsistent since the departure of experienced leaders at United. Gordon offers directness, pressing intensity and end product from wide areas, attributes that suit Carrick’s evolving structure.
The financial commitment is enormous. Spending £225m would represent a statement of intent, yet it also raises questions around squad balance and Financial Fair Play management. Qualification for the Champions League becomes pivotal, without it, such deals feel improbable.
Fans will also note Newcastle’s resolve. Paying £125m for Gordon, matching the Isak precedent, would require belief that he can deliver decisive contributions in title races and European knockouts. Tonali at £100m demands similar conviction.
Supporters crave decisive recruitment after seasons of reactive spending. If INEOS are serious about restoring United to domestic and European contention, targeting elite performers from direct rivals signals ambition. The challenge will be execution, timing and ensuring that such investment translates into sustained success rather than another expensive reset.
