Journalist reveals new Barcelona signing’s love for the club – ‘He is very Culer’ | OneFootball

After weeks of speculation, Barcelona have finally been able to not only sign but also register Joao Cancelo.

Speaking about the Portuguese international, journalist Lu Martin, who appeared on Cadena SER recently (h/t SPORT), offered anecdotes about the player’s personal life.

Martin most notably talked about how Cancelo was always a fan of Barcelona, even when he used to play for Manchester City.

Cancelo’s love for Barcelona

Lu Martin offered fascinating insights into Cancelo’s genuine passion for the Blaugrana colours. “It is true that he is very Culer,” he said, noting that the player’s fandom persisted even when he was playing at the highest level elsewhere.

Sharing an anecdote from Cancelo’s time at Manchester City, the journalist revealed that upon boarding the team bus, one of the first things Cancelo would ask the staff was, “Do we know how Barça did?”

Martin added that the Portuguese international followed the team’s news and results closely, maintaining a bond that has now culminated in his return to the club.

Beyond his love for Barcelona, Martin revealed how Cancelo is “very human” in nature, especially after having gone through the trauma of losing his mother at an early age.

In January 2013, Cancelo lost his mother, Filomena, in a car accident – a trauma that nearly caused him to retire as he felt like a “robot” who no longer enjoyed the game, Lu added.

However, Cancelo’s early life shock only adds to his strength. “He is a man who always wants to demonstrate more, for the memory of his mother,” Martin said about the right-back’s personality.

Now back to where he wanted to be, Cancelo will be looking to make full use of his opportunities and try his best to elongate his spell in Catalonia.
