FC Barcelona did not cover themselves in glory defensively against Slavia Praha, conceding two goals from set pieces. They failed to protect their near post properly on both occasions, and even otherwise, there were several blips.
Both Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde had less-than-desirable displays, and Gerard Martin started shakily before growing into the game. The only one in the back line who looked stupendous was Eric Garcia.
The 25-year-old Spain international has performed at an exceptionally high level since the start of the season, appearing in every game for Barcelona across all competitions. Yet, according to journalist David Sánchez, his case for inclusion in Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad remains surprisingly overlooked.
In a passionate editorial on La Tribu at Radio MARCA, Sánchez argued that “the only real debate, which is barely talked about, is about Eric García.“ He highlighted how the Barcelona player’s consistency and impact this season have largely gone unnoticed amid intense media focus on the goalkeeper position.
Sánchez remarked, “We continue with the absurd debate about who should be the starting goalkeeper in the next World Cup.”
In his assessment, García has produced indisputable performances whether deployed as a full-back, center-back, or even defensive midfielder, qualities that should heavily influence World Cup squad selection. Yet Sánchez lamented that no one “raises their voice to demand” his inclusion.
He recalled how García once again stepped up when the team needed him most (against Slavia), stating, “In the worst moments, he held the team together,“ and described his display against Slavia Praha as “another outstanding performance.“
Sánchez concluded with sharp criticism of the football discourse in Spain, noting that while endless discussions are held about the goalkeeper position, a season he described as “brutal” of Eric García is being ignored.
Sanchez is not wrong. Without an iota of doubt, Eric Garcia has been Barcelona’s best defender this season. At times against Slavia Praha, he was single-handedly trying to bring the team back into the game amid pressure from the Slavists.
Luis de la Fuente has shown himself to be a manager with strong faith in his allegiances. He is not a huge fan of tinkering and likes to keep the roster around him constant. However, there is a point where common sense needs to prevail.
Centre-back and right-back are arguably two of the weakest positions in the current La Roja squad, based on form. Eric can play in both positions, quite naturally, and it would make little sense if he did not make the trip to the United States this year.
