A potential Spain vs France World Cup semi-final is already generating plenty of discussion, and Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has now responded to comments recently made by teammate Lamine Yamal.
The young Spain international had stated that he does not believe France are superior to Spain, while also admitting that he would like to see the two nations meet in the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.
Those remarks understandably attracted attention, especially given the recent history between the two European heavyweights, with Spain having defeated France in both the semi-finals of Euro 2024 and the UEFA Nations League.
Now, Kounde has offered his perspective on the debate surrounding a possible Spain vs France World Cup clash.
Speaking from France’s training camp, the Barcelona defender admitted that he understands Lamine Yamal’s mentality and was not surprised by the comments made by the Spanish star.
Kounde praised the teenager’s ambition while also insisting that being labelled favourites at a major tournament carries little significance.

“I know Lamine very well. I know he’s a very strong player, an ambitious lad who speaks his mind and says things as he sees them.
“The truth is that being the favourites in a competition doesn’t mean much,” he said, as per Mundo Deportivo.
France have experienced disappointment against Spain in recent years, losing 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-finals before suffering another setback in the Nations League semi-finals a year later, when La Roja secured an entertaining 5-4 victory.
Despite those defeats, the Barcelona full-back made it clear that France are not dwelling on their recent struggles against Spain.
“It’s true that, unfortunately, the last few matches against Spain didn’t go as we’d hoped. We know that, but it doesn’t obsess me or cause me any distress.”
Aside from discussing Spain and Lamine Yamal, Kounde also addressed criticism that has come his way during the tournament.

The Barcelona defender revealed that outside opinions do not affect him, as he places greater value on the confidence shown by the coaching staff and his teammates.
“To be honest, I don’t read it. I come across it from time to time, but, frankly, I’m pretty impervious to it.
“It’s not something that worries me. I have the confidence of the manager and my teammates, and for me that’s what matters most.”
The French international also highlighted his belief in his own abilities and reiterated his determination to continue contributing positively for the national team.
“I’m also very confident in myself. I know what I’m capable of, although it’s then up to me to prove it and put it at the service of the French national team, which is what I always try to do.
“But I’m not worried about the criticism at all. I think I played well against Sweden, as did the whole team. Whether it was my best game, I don’t know,” he concluded.
