Earlier in the 2026 World Cup, Barcelona target Julian Alvarez confirmed that he wants to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, in what was his clearest indication yet that he wants to join Hansi Flick’s squad. Club bosses had been waiting for the player to make his move, and given that he did so, they are ready to make their next offer once the tournament comes to an end.
Alvarez’s comments went down well at Barcelona, but that was certainly not the case at Atleti. There was anger initially towards their player, although that was quickly levelled at their La Liga rivals, whom they have since reported to FIFA amid allegations that they “harassed” the 26-year-old into making a public statement.
Given that Alvarez’s previous comments caused such a frenzy, it is no surprise that he refused to be drawn on the matter during his next media appearance. As per MD, he spoke in the mixed zone after Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt on Tuesday, and when asked about the prospect of moving to Barcelona, he focused more on his immediate future.
“I’m thinking about the quarter-finals. Now important things are coming, so let’s go with that.”
It’s clear that Alvarez wants to join Barcelona this summer. He did not name the Catalans during his previous remarks about wanting to leave Atleti, but reports over the last few weeks have confirmed that he does not intend to listen to the likes of Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain, both of whom have shown interest in his services.
