Julian Alvarez responds to Barcelona links

Barcelona continue to be linked to Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, and the Argentina international has now responded to their supposed interest. The 24-year-old has been in fine form over the last week, with eight goal contributions in three games.

Alvarez is reportedly a weakness for Barcelona President Joan Laporta, who believes he is the one they should target next summer, despite doubts over their ability to afford a signing of that magnitude. Following his hat-trick in the Madrid derby, fresh reports emerged suggesting the Catalan giants would pursue him next summer.

“I’m very calm. It’s always being talked about, and last year a lot of things were also said. The season has just started, and my focus is on getting better every day, doing my best for the club, helping my teammates, and winning here.”

Difference in discourse between Alvarez and those around him

Alvarez had also explained last week why he had chosen to join Atletico Madrid two summers ago, and he has always maintained that he is happy at the club. However those around him seem to paint a different picture. His first coach in Argentina recently noted that Alvarez would go to Barcelona if offered the chance, as he is a fan of the club. In the summer, his agent also left Alvarez’s future very much up in the air.

As Nico Williams can explain, it will be somewhat irrelevant unless Barcelona can resolve their consistent salary limit issues. Any fee that Atletico would likely demand, bearing in mind they spent the best part of €100m on him, seems likely to be out of their reach.
