Julián Quiñones struck the first goal of the 2026 World Cup for Mexico against South Africa. According to Coluna Do Fla, the forward had been offered to Flamengo earlier this year, but no formal proposal followed.

The opener arrived in Thursday 11’s curtain-raiser at Estadio Azteca, where Quiñones capitalised on an error in the visitors’ build-up. He collected inside the box and finished.

Flamengo had been monitoring opportunities in the market and the player’s representatives proposed him to the Rio club. Other Brazilian teams were also considered, yet he stayed at Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia.

Group A has one more game on the day, with South Korea facing the Czech Republic at 22:00 Brasília time to close the round.

While Quiñones features for Mexico, Flamengo’s squad are on holiday. They are due to report back on 19 June at Ninho do Urubu, and coach Leonardo Jardim will oversee a mid-season style camp in Portugal.
