Manchester United’s most pressing need in defence is currently on the left, with Luke Shaw lacking a specialist backup.

Tyrell Malacia has bid adieu, and both Diego Leon and Harry Amass remain raw, even though head coach Michael Carrick will put the duo through their paces in pre-season.

While the England international did start all Premier League games last season, INEOS would be forgiven for feeling apprehensive about the 30-year-old, given his poor injury record.

The Red Devils might take a unique approach to solving this issue if German outlet BILD is to be believed.

This World Cup has shown what an asset Noussair Mazraoui can be on the left side of the defence, and United might ask the Moroccan to assist Shaw next season.

That will leave Diogo Dalot as the only specialist right-back, which the 20-time English league champions could address by bringing in Julian Ryerson.

The Norwegian has enjoyed a fantastic World Cup so far, and he produced his best display against Brazil in the Round of 16, keeping the electric Vinicius Jr at bay for most of the contest.

Add his 18 assists for Borussia Dortmund last season and it is clear to see why United are admirers. In fact, they have touched base with the player’s representatives again recently.

United touch base with the representatives of Julian Ryerson again

“With their sensational 2-1 victory against Brazil, they advanced to the quarterfinals. All of Norway is celebrating this historic success. Amidst the Haaland hype, one Dortmund player almost went unnoticed – yet Julian Ryerson (28) delivered a truly stellar performance.

“His strong performances haven’t gone unnoticed in England. BILD has learned that Manchester United have long had Ryerson on their wish list and recently contacted the player’s representatives again. Other top international clubs are also closely monitoring his development.”

Dortmund would prefer to tie down the Norway international to a new long-term deal, with his current contract ending in 2028.

However, should United decide to pay £26 million, it would be difficult for the Bundesliga giants to say no.

How much it would take to sign Julian Ryerson revealed

“However, one thing is clear: Borussia Dortmund wants to begin talks about an early contract extension as soon as possible after the World Cup. Ryerson is under contract until 2028 and is considered one of the club’s most important leaders.

“Nevertheless, should an offer of more than €30 million be on the table, the club’s management would have to seriously consider it. What started as a €5 million signing from Union Berlin would have become a real mega-transfer within two and a half years.”

United also have Lewis Hall, a natural left-back, on their radar, but a move for the Newcastle ace is expected to materialise only after INEOS have signed another midfielder.
