Jurgen Klopp appears to be on course for a dramatic return to football after the German Football Association confirmed it intends to hold talks with the former Liverpool manager following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation.
Germany’s disappointing World Cup campaign has triggered significant change at the top of the national side, with the DFB acting quickly to begin the search for a successor. Their official statement leaves little doubt about who is at the front of the queue, with Klopp emerging as the preferred candidate to oversee the country’s rebuild.
According to the original report from Sky Sports, the German Football Association has already acknowledged Klopp’s willingness in principle to discuss the role, raising expectations that one of Germany’s most respected coaches could soon be back in the dugout.

The announcement follows confirmation that Nagelsmann has stepped down from his position after Germany’s earlier than expected exit from the World Cup.
The DFB explained the circumstances surrounding the decision, stating:
“Julian Nagelsmann had already asked the day before in a confidential conversation with the association’s top management to relieve him of his duties.”
Rather than prolong uncertainty, Germany’s governing body has immediately turned its attention towards securing one of the country’s most successful modern managers.
The official statement added:
“DFB leadership seeks talks with Klopp. With regard to the replacement of the coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already signaled his willingness in principle to take over the post.”
Those words represent the clearest indication yet that Klopp could soon return to management after stepping away from club football.
Nagelsmann admitted the choice to resign had not been straightforward, revealing he had spent considerable time reflecting on Germany’s future before reaching his conclusion.
He said:
“I’ve thought a lot in the past few days since leaving and exchanged ideas with confidants in my personal environment and in the association. The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the success of the team.”
The departing coach also acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Germany’s tournament performance and accepted responsibility for failing to deliver the progress supporters had hoped for.
He continued:
“After such a bitter disappointment, she deserves the chance for an unencumbered new beginning. I would like to thank my coaching team, the staff and all the people in the association who supported us, especially the players with whom I was able to work in a spirit of trust.”
Nagelsmann also offered an emotional message to supporters.
“A special thank you also goes to the fans. You have carried us, you have trusted us, you have given us energy, even in difficult phases. I am sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more football nights at this World Cup. You would have deserved much more!”
His departure closes a brief but turbulent spell in charge and opens the door for a manager with vastly different experience and stature.
Should Klopp accept the position, Germany would be appointing a coach with an exceptional record of transforming teams through clear identity, tactical discipline and outstanding man management.
Across his coaching career, Klopp has rebuilt clubs while developing elite players and creating highly competitive squads capable of challenging for the biggest honours. His achievements have established him as one of world football’s defining coaches of the modern era.
International football presents a different challenge from the weekly demands of club management, yet Klopp’s motivational qualities and ability to foster unity could prove invaluable for a Germany side searching for renewed confidence.
Equally important is his understanding of German football from grassroots level through to the international stage. Few candidates possess his combination of experience, credibility and connection with the national game.
While discussions still need to take place, the DFB’s public acknowledgement of Klopp’s willingness suggests both parties recognise the opportunity now in front of them.
Germany now faces one of its most significant appointments in recent years.
Replacing Nagelsmann is about more than selecting a coach. It is about restoring belief after another disappointing international campaign and creating a team capable of competing consistently with Europe’s leading nations once again.
The speed of the DFB’s response indicates there is little appetite for a prolonged search. Instead, attention has focused almost immediately on Klopp, whose reputation has made him the standout candidate.
As reported the official statement from the German Football Association strongly indicates that discussions are expected to begin shortly.
If those talks progress positively, Klopp’s return to football could arrive far sooner than many expected, with Germany hoping one of its greatest coaching exports can lead the national team into a new era.
