The incident occurred on July 21, 2023 when Rugani was involved in an automobile accident with his Maserati just outside the city.

When submitted to a standard breathalyser test, the result was 1.56 grams per litre, three times over the legal limit of 0.5 g/l.

The Italian justice system is notoriously slow and has several levels of appeal, so only today was it confirmed that Rugani was given a six-month suspended prison sentence, had his driving licence revoked and must pay a €2,000 fine.

He had originally tried to get the sentence commuted to community service, but the judge rejected that appeal.

The 30-year-old defender is currently on loan with Ajax in the Netherlands and therefore was not present for the sentencing.

He has seven senior caps for Italy, the first was earned in September 2016.
