Former Sunderland target Jhon Lucumí is drawing renewed interest from Juventus, Roma and Bournemouth. According to Tutto Juve, no club is currently prepared to immediately trigger the Bologna defender’s €28 million release clause, which runs until mid-July, so his situation is unlikely to be resolved before the end of June. Bologna could then be open to talks at around €20 million to €22 million, roughly £17.5 million to £19.3 million, with the 27-year-old having one year left on his contract.
Sunderland targeted the Colombia international after promotion to the Premier League, submitting bids and wage proposals, and the player was thought to be open at one stage. Bologna, having lost other key defenders, were reluctant to sell and the move collapsed. The Black Cats chose not to revive the approach in January.
Lucumí joined from Genk in 2022 and has become a cornerstone for the Rossoblù. He has made 149 appearances, lifted the Coppa Italia in 2024-25 and helped secure Champions League qualification.
This season he posted a team-high 168 defensive contributions in Serie A, averaging 1.4 interceptions and 0.5 blocks per 90 minutes. Those figures rank first and second respectively among Bologna players.
His profile, combining top-level experience, aggression and comfort in possession, explained Sunderland’s strong interest under Régis Le Bris. Bologna must now weigh a sale against the risk of losing value, with this summer likely their last chance for a significant fee unless a new deal is agreed. Barcelona have been credited with monitoring him and his agent has signalled he is settled in Italy, while a strong World Cup with Colombia could raise interest further.
