Kairat Almaty forward Jorginho recently spoke with AS ahead of a historic Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
The Kazakh side will host the Spanish giants tonight, and the 27-year-old striker offered his thoughts on the challenge and his approach to the game.
Addressing talks of any potential favouritism, Jorginho made it clear that Kairat’s presence in the competition is no accident.
“If you compare the level of teams by ranking, we shouldn’t be here. If you ask, they’ll say we don’t belong here. But nobody plays in the Champions League by luck,” he said.
The striker also shared his admiration for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.
“I like his character and his mentality. I think he learned from players like Sergio Ramos and has maintained that drive. It excites me to play against him.”
He also had some words reserved for the Real Madrid players who have played in Portugal in the past.
“I’m also curious to see Courtois and those who played in Portugal, like Carreras and Militao.
“I want to see if there really is that much of a difference between them and me, because they also came from my country’s league, or if it’s just a matter of context.”

When asked about the draw, which saw Real Madrid as Kairat’s opponent, Jorginho was relaxed.
“To be honest, it didn’t matter too much to me. I just wanted to see more rivals emerge. Not out of disrespect for Real Madrid, but how can you choose between all those teams in the first pot?
Real Madrid, Barcelona, City, Inter. All incredible teams. How to choose? It wouldn’t be fair to say, ‘I want this one or that one.’”
On the threat posed by Madrid’s attackers, Jorginho humorously said that he considers Xabi Alonso the most dangerous player.
“I’ve always admired Xabi Alonso as a player. I used to pick him in Pro Evolution Soccer and FIFA when he was at Liverpool.
“But right now, the most dangerous is Mbappé. He scores in every game, it’s incredible.”
Jorginho also hinted at a playful gesture when asked if there is any player he would ask for a shirt.
“Xabi Alonso… I’ll say to him after the match: ‘Xabi, can I keep your shoes? I’m sure there’s a lot of quality there’ (laughs).”
Kairat Almaty will be underdogs against the European champions, but Jorginho’s excitement and respect for Real Madrid show the mentality his team will bring to the match.
