Karim Benzema has stepped back from Al-Ittihad until further notice after being unhappy with a contract extension proposal made on Wednesday by Saudi Pro League director of football Michael Emenalo.

According to Foot Mercato, the 38-year-old has withdrawn from the squad. Club executives are powerless because the league is his employer.

Benzema is out of contract in June. Al-Ittihad had promised an extension since last summer, yet the first firm offer only arrived five days before the transfer window closes.

His camp regarded the proposal as insulting and disrespectful, viewing it as effectively playing for free outside his image rights.

It is a major blow for Sergio Conceiçao’s side, who lose their captain and the driving force behind last season’s cup and league double.

A month and a half ago he said he was in the right place and part of the project, signalling a desire to extend his stay in Saudi Arabia. He is likely to miss Al-Najma on Sunday, with Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s club, to come in eight days.
