Karl Darlow has left Leeds United for Manchester United, describing the switch as a special opportunity after the move was confirmed. The 35-year-old Wales international turned down a new Elland Road contract.
Leeds could not guarantee him a starting place because they intend to sign a goalkeeper this summer, so he chose Manchester United. The decision ends his spell after helping win promotion then secure Premier League status.
In an Instagram farewell set to Olivia Dean’s Ok Love You Bye, Darlow thanked team-mates, coaches, staff and supporters. The message expressed pride in helping the club return to the Premier League, satisfaction that it would remain there, and a promise to watch from afar while wishing everyone success.
Darlow said he was proud to sign for Manchester United, and that joining an excellent group of goalkeepers would help push standards demanded by the club. He called it an exciting moment and said he wants to support team-mates and help drive the group forward.
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Darlow’s pedigree at the highest level, citing his work ethic and determination. He said United were delighted to add his quality and experience to their goalkeeping group.
