Manchester United’s plan to raid bitter rivals Leeds United for goalkeeper Karl Darlow has taken a sharp twist, according to a new report.

Back-up To Lammens

While a major revamp in midfield is the Red Devils’ priority this summer, a new No.2 to back up Senne Lammens is also on the agenda.

The 23-year-old Belgian has proven to be one of the club’s best purchases in recent memory, having thrived in his debut season following an £18.1 million switch from Royal Antwerp last summer.

Where both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir were agents of chaos in the backline, Lammens has been a source of strength and stability.

After spending last year on loan with Süper Lig side Trabzonspor, Onana will remain in Türkiye as another season-long loan has now been agreed with the Black Storm for the 30-year-old Cameroonian.

Similarly, Türkiye international Bayindir is expected to return to his homeland if a suitable offer arrives, with Besiktas one of the frontrunners.

This will leave Michael Carrick without a No.2 goalkeeper, given Tom Heaton put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension to resume his role as third-choice.

Darlow set to remain at Elland Road

Despite starting last season as a back-up, Darlow emerged as Leeds United’s first-choice after the struggles of Lucas Perri. The 35-year-old Wales international racked up 22 appearances in the Premier League, playing a key role in Daniel Farke’s newly promoted side being steered to safety.

However, Darlow’s contract at Elland Road was set to expire this month, leading Manchester United to eye a cut-price swoop to add an experienced shot-stopper to their ranks.

INEOS are understood to have held talks with the 6’3″ Northampton native, who has previously enjoyed spells at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

But in a blow to the Red Devils’ plans, Darlow is set to snub interest from M16 in favour of signing a new deal at Elland Road to remain the Whites’ No.1.

The Leeds Press reveals: “Leeds have offered [Darlow] a new contract, but the delay in negotiations led to suggestions that he could be on his way out of Elland Road in the ongoing window. However, there is now clear indication that Darlow is set to stay and snub the interest from Manchester United by signing a new contract with Leeds.”

The local paper relays an inside source who claims the goalkeeper is on the “cusp of signing a new two-year contract with the Yorkshire giants.”

Alternative options on the radar at Old Trafford include Nottingham Forest’s Angus Gunn and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Sam Johnstone, formerly a Red Devil.
