Lennart Karl joined Germany’s record books with his debut appearance in the entertaining win in Switzerland. Julian Nagelsmann’s side prevailed in their first test of the new year thanks to Florian Wirtz’s world-class performance.
According to Transfermarkt, the Bayern Munich winger is the seventh youngest player to feature for Germany. At 18 years and 33 days, Karl is also among the top three youngest debutants for Nationalmannschaft in the 21st century.
Since the legendary Uwe Seeler’s debut in 1954, only Youssoufa Moukoko and Jamal Musiala played at a younger age for Germany than Karl. The young prodigy replaced the ineffective Leroy Sané as part of Nagelsmann's first two substitutions a few minutes after the hour mark.
Meanwhile, Kimmich’s 107th appearance puts him one behind the ninth capped player in the history of the national team, Jurgen Klinsmann. Lothar Matthäus is the leading appearance maker with 150 games between 1980 and 2000.
