Karrikaburu back in the stands as summer future remains unresolved

Jon Karrikaburu spent another difficult Sunday in the stands, the only available Real Sociedad first-team player omitted for a technical decision. He watched alongside Rupérez, the reserve defender initially named in the squad after a pre-season injury.

According to AS, this latest absence confirms he is not in Pellegrino Matarazzo’s plans, extending an almost blank year with scant attacking chances at Anoeta.

He has played only once all season, on 22 April against Getafe, just after Real Sociedad lifted the Copa. The academy forward was injured two minutes after coming on.

Before that, he had limited continuity under Sergio Francisco, featuring in seven matches. The arrival of Matarazzo has since shut the door even when injuries seemed to open a gap up front.

Last summer, after a strong loan at Racing, he fielded several offers to leave Donostia but chose to stay and honour a contract that runs to 2027. Opportunities did not arrive, even following Óskarsson’s injury.

A January move fell through for lack of agreement with suitors, then Wesley Gassova joined after Take Kubo’s injury, while the coach backed academy striker Gorka Carrera. Carrera is currently ahead of Karrikaburu for first-team minutes.

Barring a major surprise, all signs point to a summer exit after four loans in recent years without securing a place in the senior side. The striker will look for a new destination to regain minutes and confidence in front of goal that he has not found under Matarazzo.
