Kasper Schmeichel will retire from professional football after a shoulder injury at Celtic, with his contract in Glasgow nearing its end. The Denmark goalkeeper, 39, has chosen to call time on a career of more than 20 years.

"I will end my professional career when my contract with Celtic finishes in June. I have consulted different surgeons and specialists about my shoulder, and they explained that I should not expect to play again at the highest level. I have thought about it a lot, but I think this is the right time," he told TV 2 Sport.

He has not played since March and bows out with a Scottish title, secured by his team-mates on the final day.

Schmeichel joined Leicester in 2011, won the Championship in 2014 and was in goal for the club's historic Premier League title in 2016, considered one of the greatest feats in the history of the English top flight.

After 11 years with Leicester he moved to OGC Nice for 2022-2023, then joined Anderlecht before arriving at Celtic. He won 120 caps for Denmark.
