In a statement, Kevin Lamour, FIFA’s director general and number three, sharply criticised president Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, calling it the project of one person.

The proposal, he insisted, must not proceed, and he urged football’s political leaders to ask the right questions and take the right decisions.

He argued FIFA staff had been misled by a lack of transparency and deserved better than contempt and intimidation. He accepted his stance could cost him his job and said he would respect that decision and sleep well.

Hours earlier, American adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned over the plan, citing FIFA’s consideration of selling World Cup stakes.

Infantino now faces mounting pressure, with UEFA and Concacaf having clearly expressed their disagreement with the proposal.
