Kevin Phillips has told Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon to keep his head down and keep quiet after the winger’s post-derby remarks.
Gordon put Newcastle ahead on 10 minutes and the hosts created further first-half chances, but Sunderland reached the interval one goal down. The visitors improved after the break, Chemsdine Talbi levelled and Brian Brobbey struck late to seal a dramatic win. Eddie Howe and his players were booed off.
Reflecting on the defeat, Gordon said Newcastle were good only for 45 minutes and admitted recurring problems after half-time. He felt Sunderland were the better side in the second half, adding that, in his view, they are not a very good team compared to Newcastle and that they should not have lost, especially at home.
“Not only lose the derby, but lost two derbies this season. Let's get that right. Anthony Gordon is a fantastic player but he didn't turn up in the first game and he didn't pretty much turn up in the second game apart from the goal. I would just keep my head down, keep quiet and crack on with my work.” He told talkSPORT.
“Listen, it was a fantastic performance from Sunderland, an incredible win. For the first 10 minutes they were the better team but, after that, Sunderland matched them, was far superior in the second half and deserved to win the game. It’s as simple as that.”
