"I think someone will pay what Sunderland are after," Kevin Phillips said to Sunderland Echo about Anthony Patterson. "If I was Wrexham, I'd get it done, to be honest."
Sunderland are understood to be seeking about £eight million to £10 million for the goalkeeper, with interest from Millwall, Wolves and Wrexham.
Patterson played a key part in promotion to the Premier League last year, then lost the first-choice role under Regis Le Bris to Dutch international Robin Roefs in pre-season, and joined Millwall on loan in January.
"And ultimately, of course, to us, it's a lot of money, but in reality, is it? I don't think it is. You know, you're getting an excellent keeper that's got good experience in the Championship."
"And for me, if you don't do it early, someone will come in and buy him, and they might regret it."
"So, ultimately every club plays hardball. They'll all say, 'We don't want to pay that'. But ultimately, in the background, things are probably getting worked on. And it probably will end up happening at some point."
