Kieran Trippier has issued a defiant message regarding his future as he enters the final four months of his Newcastle United contract.

The veteran full-back is approaching the twilight of his career at 35, but remains adamant that he still has much to offer at the highest level.

“I’m far from done as a player – I think age is just a number,” Trippier was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.

“With the nutrition we’ve got these days and the way you look after your body and yourself, it’s key.

“That’s what I have been doing throughout my career, and I still feel fit, strong, like I’ve still got many years left in my playing career.”

Trippier’s contract expires on June 30, and although manager Eddie Howe has praised his leadership in the past, a new deal is yet to materialise.

The defender has featured regularly this term, making 29 appearances across all competitions.

Trippier has been linked with Saudi Pro League clubs in the past, but his latest comments suggest he is not considering a move to the Middle East at the moment.

With Tino Livramento still battling persistent injury problems, retaining Trippier for another year or two may be a wise move for Newcastle.

His performances have declined this season, as shown in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Everton, where he won just one of his eight ground duels. However, is still a useful squad player.

Newcastle have now dropped to 12th in the Premier League table, further dealing a blow to their increasingly slim chances of continental qualification.
